The Wavelight EX 500 Excimer Laser system combines a number of innovations in refractive technology to produce fast, effective, and reliable procedures.

With a repetition rate of 500 pulses per second, the EX 500 is the fastest on the US market today. It delivers an incredibly smooth sculpting treatment and has an average treatment time of approximately 1.4 seconds per diopter. This rapid treatment speed translates into less dehydration of the corneal bed and improved refractive predictability due to fewer hydration changes. The laser is very reliable, extremely quick, highly accurate, and has a fast-responding infrared eye tracker.

The Wavelight EX500 excimer laser system utilizes PerfectPulse Technology to help ensure precise work at high speeds. PerfectPulse Technology means that every laser pulse is completely controlled and optimized from its generation to the point when it contacts the cornea. An ultra-thin Gaussian laser beam at 0.68mm spot size is used to sculpt the corneal surface with the utmost precision.

In order to further enhance the safety and precision of the treatment, PerfectPulse ology uses proprietary eye-tracking technology to follow the eye’s fastest movements and to ensure an accurate placement of each laser pulse on the cornea. Tracking at speeds 10 times faster than movements of the natural eye, the tracker provides exact positioning of the calculated ablation profile to address astigmatism and to prevent the induction of higher-order aberrations to optimize treatment results. During the treatment, the energy stability of every pulse is controlled on the basis of a smart energy control, which automatically balances the energy levels to ensure that each laser pulse creates the same accurate result.

Allegretto WaveLight technology also features a unique approach to corneal sculpting. The normal curvature of a healthy cornea is higher in the center. Most laser systems flatten centrally to create an oblate cornea. This oblate shape causes spherical aberration, which degrades the quality of vision, especially at night, and often produces glare or halos.

A small diameter laser beam, also known as a spot size, is very important for both accuracy and smoothness. While beam size is critical, so is the type of laser beam. A Gaussian beam allows for the smoothest corneal surface as compared to non-gaussian beams.   The result is that with a small beam less than 1 millimeter with a Gaussian profile allows for the proper and accurate treatment of the smallest curvatures of the cornea and also allowing for a smooth corneal surface.

This laser can effectively treat people with larger pupils. The expanded optical zones allow for larger treatment zones, up to 8mm, which can minimize glare, halos, and potential night vision problems. Many patients with high prescriptions who previously were not candidates because of unacceptable risks of visual side effects are now candidates with the advent of this new laser technology.

So what are the advantages the EX500 provides? Take a look:

  • Faster treatment – featuring a 500hz repetition rate, the EX500 is America’s fastest excimer laser. Faster speed means more accuracy and a quicker overall treatment. The speed of treatment is significant because it prevents dehydration of the cornea, which leads to better results.
  • More accurate treatment – the EX500 is equipped with a multi-dimensional eye tracker that calibrates the position of your eye over 1000 times a second, resulting in the most consistent treatment possible.       Coupled with the enhanced speed of the laser, these improvements greatly reduce any chance of a complication whatsoever.
  • Wider range of treatment – the EX500 has one of the widest treatment ranges available for even the highest levels of hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. Even if you’ve been told you are not a candidate for LASIK, the EX500 could now be a treatment option for you.
  • Better results – With dynamic wavefront-optimized treatment, the accuracy if treatment is unsurpassed. In fact, the WaveLight EX500 has been proven to actually improveyour night vision by reducing glares and halos, when compared to other excimer laser systems.
