James T. Murphy, M.D.

Dr. James Murphy is a fellowship trained glaucoma subspecialist, with a focus in glaucoma, and complex cataract and anterior segment surgical techniques. Dr. Murphy has experience in laser-assisted cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implantation, complex and advanced techniques in cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), traditional and implant glaucoma surgery, and laser treatments for glaucoma. His special interests include new imaging modalities for detection, monitoring of disease, and minimally invasive surgical treatments of glaucoma.

Dr. Murphy received his undergraduate degree from The University of Wisconsin and graduated with honors from the Medical College of Wisconsin. While attending medical school, he worked to improve and strengthen the medical Spanish education curriculum at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and was a participant in and organizer of several medical missions to Central and South America. He then completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Murphy completed his fellowship in glaucoma and complex anterior segment surgery at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute of the Columbia University-New York Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was appointed instructor in ophthalmology and had active roles in clinical and surgical education of both residents and medical students of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has presented research at international conferences focusing on advanced imaging in glaucoma and new surgical techniques. In addition, Dr. Murphy has a strong interest in international medicine and global initiatives in early glaucoma detection.
